Last night, before I went out to party with Paris Hilton, I met up with Tamar for a long overdue hang session / movie date. She and I haven’t had the chance to hang out for a while now so we managed to agree on seeing a movie together last night. Neither one of us had seen Gravity yet and because everyone is buzzing about how good the movie is, we knew that that was the movie we had to see. Overall, I liked the film very much … even if I felt it had a few problems. Unfortunately, a huge eff up on the part of the Arclight Theater ticketing system made for an overall unsatisfactory experience for the both of us and, sadly, I’d say our movie date was kinda ruined.
Pretty much everyone I know has been raving about how great Gravity is so I went in with pretty big expectations. I’d say the movie exceeded my expectations in some regard and didn’t quite meet them in others. The experience for the viewer, especially in 3D, was truly remarkable. When they’re up there, floating in space … it really does feel like you’re in space with them. The director was able to make the audience feel as if they were tumbling in space along with Sandra Bullock and that really made for a fun movie-going experience. I will say that I wasn’t too keen on the “everything that can go wrong, does go wrong” mentality of the story but I get it … it’s a movie, they have to make it as exciting as possible. But at every turn, something goes horribly wrong again and again and I was all, Enough already! I liked the ending … but I didn’t love it. The viewer is smacked over the head with such painfully obvious metaphor that I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. That Bullock‘s character had to seemingly climb out of the metaphorical primordial ooze and be reborn on Earth after her harrowing experience in space was … a lot. That said, considering the way that things were going for her thruout the entire movie, I have expected her to crash land in the middle of the ocean, thousands of miles from land … and then drown. But, again, it’s a movie and you have to just go with the flow sometimes. There are far more things about Gravity that I LOVED than things I didn’t like very much so I’m happy with this movie. I’m curious to see how it does come awards season. Technical awards, yes. Acting awards? Well, we’ll see. I highly recommend this movie … see it on the biggest screen possible in 3D.
I wish I could say that Tam and I had fun last night but because the Arclight sold our reserved seats twice, and the other couple with our same seat numbers got there first, we were forced to spend the first 10 minutes of the movie finding somewhere else to sit. We had to sit on the far left side, which isn’t idea for 3D and Tamar, I’m sorry to say, wasn’t able to enjoy the movie at all. They gave us free passes to see the movie (or another) again but it’s a bummer that our first time seeing the movie was ruined. Ah well, stuff happens. I still contend that the Arclight is the best movie theater I’ve ever been to so I guess I can’t really complain. I’ve never had a problem like this before so … yeah, stuff happens.
