"This is proof that UNESCO is motivated by political and not cultural considerations," Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said in a statement following the decision.
"Instead of taking steps to promote peace, the Palestinians are acting unilaterally, which makes peace more distant," Reuters quoted the statement as saying.
Ofir Gendelman, Netanyahu's spokesman for Arabic media, said the world "must remember that the Church of the Nativity which is holy to Christianity was desecrated by Palestinian terrorists" in 2002.
Gendelman wrote on Twitter after the announcement that "Instead of the Palestinians taking steps to further peace, they are acting in a unilateral way that only distances peace."
The US ambassador to UNESCO, David Killion, said he was "profoundly disappointed by the decision".

The thing is, we now know for a fact that plants can be bread for roundup readiness without 'stealing' Monsanto's gene (because it's been done), using only more conventional breeding and selection techniques. We also know that there are weeds growing wild that have the necessary resistance to roundup and that they are close enough to canola to breed with it. We know this because now that fields are being drenched in roundup routinely, we have weeds that are resistant to it.
Further, until Monsanto started it's war on everything not Monsanto, it was understood that the proprietary nature of a trait in a plant died once it crossed with someone else's plants. That is, you have some very special variety of corn. I am free to plant my perfectly ordinary corn on my adjoining property AND select for the amazing traits of your corn in the resulting future generations. I can even do so until I fully recreate your very special corn down to the last gene (but in practice I would stop once I had the desirable traits and had bread out undesirable ones, I wouldn't need or want a perfect copy).
Actual ownership of the gene itself is quite new and on somewhat shaky ground, especially since the gene was NOT created by designing a sequence of amino acids necessary to create the wanted trait, it was found and inserted into the genome.
A wrinkle you're missing is that Monsanto's traits actually contaminated the line of canola that Schmeiser had been developing using conventional breeding techniques for his own use for many years. He was faced with a choice of destroying years of his own work or just pretending the Monsanto gene didn't exist.
And that's the big issue. Monsanto crops contaminate the genome of non-Monsanto crops, then Monsanto sues the victim.

Bristol Palin is ready to make her private life public in "Life's a Tripp."
By Reuters
Bristol Palin says she is just a "grounded, normal mom", and is hoping her new reality TV show will prove it. "Life's a Tripp", which premieres on the Lifetime channel on Tuesday, June 19, is being promoted as an inside look at the life of "America's most famous teen mom" in the face of intense media scrutiny.
It follows the eldest daughter of polarizing conservative politician Sarah Palin as she embarks on her latest adventure - a move from her Wasilla, Alaska hometown to a Los Angeles mansion owned by a family friend, and back again -- along with her young son Tripp.
Palin burst onto the national scene four years ago in what she now calls "one of the most intense and embarrassing ways possible" as the accidentally pregnant, unmarried 17-year-old daughter of the 2008 Republican vice-presidential candidate.
She has since parlayed her notoriety into a lucrative career as a speaker on teen pregnancy prevention, a somewhat tongue-tied stint on "Dancing With the Stars", a 2011 memoir, a controversial blog, and now her own 10-episode reality show.
"Bristol really didn't hold back. As the series progresses, she really opens up her life to us," Matt Lutz, one of the show's producers, told Reuters.
"We see her relationship with her son, with her family, her boyfriend, we see her struggles as a single mom, and struggling dealing with her ex-fianc? Levi Johnston and his role in Tripp's life. It's really a no-holds-barred look at Bristol's life," Lutz said.
Volunteering, shopping, fighting?
Early episodes of the show see Bristol doing volunteer work for a few weeks at small Los Angeles charity "Help the Children", while her 17-year-old sister Willow takes care of 3-year-old Tripp -- until Willow gets fed up and packs her bags for Wasilla.
In between times, the sisters hang out at cafes, take Tripp to playgrounds, argue over childcare and disparage L.A.'s trashier clothing styles while shopping.
Bristol Palin also rides a mechanical bull during a night out with friends in a Hollywood bar, and she runs into a heckler who calls her mother evil and a whore.
The heckler this week filed a lawsuit accusing Palin of defamation for citing the 2011 incident in her decision to leave Los Angeles and accusing Lifetime of filming him without permission.
Clearly ill at ease in the Hollywood spotlight, Palin moved back to Alaska after about three months of filming, and the show returns with her to follow her life back home.
The larger Palin clan of five children and mom Sarah, who were seen in last year's reality series "Sarah Palin's Alaska", are also featured, producers say.
"Once we head back to Alaska, you see her in her natural environment with her family. I think the later episodes are more representative of her life but the first few are her having an experience and an adventure in Los Angeles," said Lutz.
That adventure wasn't Bristol Palin's first solo effort. She bought a house in Phoenix, Arizona in late 2010 but rented it out after a few months before selling it in the spring of 2012.
The series has a nomadic history of its own. It was first planned as a show about Palin sharing an L.A. apartment with her "Dancing With the Stars" pal Kyle Massey and his actor brother Chris and was expected to air on the BIO channel in 2011.
BIO scrapped it and Lifetime took over, retooling it as a series focusing on Palin and her son.

It was only last week that Acer unveiled its first touchscreen Ultrabook, so you'd be forgiven if you forgot about the company's other pinch-thin laptop -- the one that was announced back in January at CES. That would be the Aspire S5, and now, five months later, it's finally going on sale. We just got word that it will hit shelves the last week of this month, with a starting price of $1,400. To recap (in case you've been overwhelmed by all the Ultrabooks on display lately), this is the one with the motorized, drop-down door hiding HDMI, USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt ports. If fourteen hundred bucks seems expensive, remember that these specs (a Core i7 Ivy Bridge processor and 256GB SSD) are actually pretty standard for the money. And, at 2.65 pounds, it's lighter than almost every other 13-inch Ultrabook we've seen. Still, at that price we'd expect something a little crisper than a 1366 x 768 display.
For what it's worth, too, the S5 is the first product to ship in the US with the company's free AcerCloud service baked in. In brief, you get unlimited storage for backing up your stuff, all of which you can access remotely using an Android app (Acer has said iOS and Windows Phone versions are on the way). As with other syncing services, your computer needs to be asleep, not powered-off, in order for you to retrieve your files, so avoid shutting down if you think you'll need to reach into your PC later.
In other news, Acer is refreshing its first-gen S3 Ultrabook with a new champagne color, and will now offer it with an Ivy Bridge Core i7 processor and 256GB hard drive. The starting price has dropped to $648 with a Sandy Bridge CPU, with the highest-end models fetching about $1,000. Look for these upgraded models sometime next week.
Acer Aspire S5 Ultrabook arriving this month for $1,400, S3 gets updated with Ivy Bridge and new color originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 14 Jun 2012 08:00:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

The telecommunications Industry is identified as a major driver of global economic recovery. An unprecedented growth of high-speed mobile Internet traffic, particularly for wireless data and video, has transformed the industry into the most evolving, inventive and keenly contested industry.
In addition, the emergence of mobile broadband technology has created several new service areas, which potentially offers huge growth potential. This includes IPTV, collaboration and cloud computing, videoconferencing and mobile payment, to name a few. Research firm Ovum recently reported that global revenue of telecom service providers exceeded $1.91 trillion in 2011, an improvement of 6.7% year over year. The momentum is expected to remain high in 2012.
Recent Performance
The U.S. telecommunications industry is witnessing consistent growth despite experiencing a slow moving U.S. economy. This is evident from the stock price movement of the large nationwide carriers. Year to date, the stock price of Verizon Communications (VZ - Analyst Report) was up 9.64%, the stock price of AT&T (T - Analyst Report) up 17.04%, and that of Sprint Nextel (S - Analyst Report) was up 27.35%. However, during the same time period, the benchmark S&P 500 index was marginally up by 3.81%.?
Most of the large national telecom service providers together with the regional prepaid telecom operators generated net subscriber addition in the first quarter of 2012. Verizon Wireless, a joint venture between Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group plc. (VOD - Analyst Report), added 501,000 post-paid subscribers out of total net addition of 734,000. AT&T Inc. added a net 187,000 post-paid subscribers out of total net addition of 726,000. Sprint Nextel Corp. gained a net 263,000 postpaid subscribers out of total net addition of 1.1 million. MetroPCS Communications Inc. (PCS - Analyst Report) and Leap Wireless International Inc. (LEAP - Analyst Report) added net 131,654 and 258,000 wireless subscribers, respectively, in the previous quarter.??
Structure
The telecommunications industry encompasses a lot of technology-related businesses. The legacy local and long-distance wireline phone services, telecommunications industry also includes wireless communications, Internet services, fiber optics networks, cable TV networks and commercial satellite communications.
A major characteristic of the telecommunications industry is the huge barriers to entry due to scarcity of public airwaves (spectrum). The U.S. telecom market is controlled by just four national players, as regional low-cost operators are not eligible to compete with these large carriers. Furthermore, it is not easy to establish a new telecom carrier since it will require government permission to transmit voice, data and video on public airwaves. Spectrum licenses are limited and therefore quite expensive. Moreover, deployment of network infrastructure, whether high-speed wireless (3G/4G) or wireline (fiber optic), requires significant capital expenditure, which very few entities can afford.
Key Attribute
We believe that the overall economic dynamics may shift in favor of telecommunications industry, primarily due to its key attribute of being a major infrastructure product for both the emerging and developed nations. Telecommunications is one of the very few industries, which witnessed massive technological improvement even under recession. The major thrust of the telecommunications sector is backed by continuous network and product upgrade and invention by the industry players.
For the last 15 years, the U.S. wireless sector invested no less than $300 billion to install seamless communications networks throughout the world. The telecommunications industry as a whole generates over 2.4 million jobs in the U.S., which is expected to grow by another 200,000 in 2012 due to increasing adoption of next-generation super-fast 4G LTE networks. Growing demand for technically superior products has been the silver lining for the telecommunication industry in an otherwise tough environment. These developments are also helping telecom equipment manufacturers, infrastructure solutions providers and mobile phone makers to consolidate their finances.
Wireless is the Key
Despite the massive growth in fiber-to-the-home networks, we believe wireless networks will be the key player in the telecom industry growth story. The sector is witnessing a fundamental change. Earlier, it was voice calls that brought money to the operators. Currently, data and video have become the focus. Any new network standard aims at faster data connectivity, quick video streaming with high resolution and rich multimedia applications. Growing demand for wireless products has been the silver lining for the telecommunication industry in an otherwise tough environment.
Spectrum Crunch & Market Saturation
The U.S. wireless industry is facing acute spectrum shortages, sometime resulting in data packet dropping. Carriers are investing heavily for more effective utilization of their existing spectrum holding and are trying hard to add more spectrums to their portfolio. In addition to the four nationwide carriers, all the smaller pre-paid wireless operators are also opting for a sound LTE network to offer hassle free broadband video streaming and data transmission.
Meanwhile, smartphone penetration has crossed more or less half of the total U.S. post-paid wireless subscribers. Recently, pre-paid carriers have decided to offer high-end smartphones, such as iPhone 4S in the near future.
Spectrum crunch coupled with gradual smartphone market saturation are forcing the wireless operators to look for other options to raise revenue. These include new pricing plan, a shift from unlimited data usage to tier-based data usage, and higher upgrade fees for smartphones in order to offset handset subsidies. Nevertheless, the average revenue per user for most of the wireless carriers are rising over the last two years and are expected to grow in the long term, primarily due to a massive growth of mobile data usage.
As smartphone users are now increasingly downloading multimedia contents, video has become the primary network traffic. What is more interesting, in addition to download, the smartphone and tablet users are uplinking more and more video content, and in turn, becoming broadcasters on their own. Several industry researchers predicted that video may account for 60% of total network traffic by the end of 2012.
Near-term Catalysts
The U.S. telecommunications industry is likely to be benefited in the near future from two ways: (1) recent approval of the U.S. Congress to initiate a fresh round of spectrum auction for the wireless industry (2) significant technological inventions and innovations that make even a mature market like the U.S. highly lucrative for the telecom operators.
In February 2012, the U.S. Congress has decided to free up spectrum currently used by TV broadcasters for commercial wireless networks and to deploy a nationwide interoperable public-safety broadband network. Huge proliferation of smartphones, tablets, and several other pocket-sized mobile devices significantly raised the demand for bandwidth for seamless wireless connectivity. The spectrum auction is expected to generate $25 -$30 billion from the U.S. government.?
Furthermore, as the global economy recovers slowly, demand for real-time voice, data and video increases by leaps and bounds. The FCC has estimated that within the next 5 years, mobile-data demand will grow 25-50 folds from its current level. These latest developments are enabling the telecom service providers to undertake large network extension while upgrading plans. The decision of Congress is mainly aimed to solve growing consumer demand for efficient wireless networks.?
Merger and Acquisition to Continue
Despite the failed merger agreement between AT&T and T-Mobile USA, we believe the U.S. telecom industry will witness more M&A in 2012. AT&T needs spectrum to compete with its bigger rival Verizon Wireless. Verizon has entered into a spectrum buying deal with major cable MSOs including Comcast Corp. (CMCSA - Analyst Report), Time Warner Cable Inc. (TWC - Analyst Report) and Bright House Networks. The deal is currently under FCC scrutiny.
Similarly, small prepaid operators like MetroPCS and Leap Wireless may also join hands or merge with a nationwide carrier in order to attain economies of scale and pricing power. DISH Network Corp. (DISH - Analyst Report), which holds a large wireless spectrum, has already declared that it is not averse to a deal as an acquirer or an acquired entity.
Competition Looms Large
Massive technology invention and innovation have resulted in significant competitive atmosphere within the telecommunications industry. Product life-cycle and upgrade-cycle have been reduced drastically since several firms are coming out with new types of products and services within a short span of time. Increasing competition is actually forcing each and every player to offer heterogeneous and bundled services.
We may see more product sharing deals between telecom, cable TV, and satellite TV operators as each of these players are trying to get a foothold into other?s territory. Even, pay-TV services, offerings to business enterprises, and mobile backhaul and metro-Ethernet segments may witness more convergence. Mobile phone makers are now gradually offering tablets (small laptops); chipset manufacturers are offering personal computers and mobile phones are frequently interchanging their areas of operations.
OPPORTUNITIES
The telecommunications industry as a whole offers a number of attributes that are difficult to ignore from the standpoint of investors.
The companies that match well with the aforementioned considerations include AT&T Inc., Verizon Communications Inc. and Sprint Nextel Corp.
WEAKNESSES
Generally telecommunications companies that were under pressure have high debt levels and large financial leverage ratios or are unable to cope with the recent market trends. Other risks that remain are as follows:
The companies that match well with the aforementioned considerations include SK Telecom Co. Ltd. (skm - Analyst Report), Telefonica Brasil S.A. (VIV - Analyst Report) and NII Holdings Inc. (NIHD - Analyst Report).

According to its creators, theBlu is a "revolutionary new app?a living, breathing digital art exhibit of ocean habitats and species." Talk about lofty goals for of all things, a screensaver. But, heck, Ted Danson is involved, so how bad can it be? So what is it, exactly? Though theBlu does serve as a screensaver, it's also a visually ravishing game-like social app that takes you under the waves for a delightful escape from this landlocked world. It's the opportunity to learn about that essential 71 percent of Earth's surface, which a large portion of any money you spend in the app will go towards protecting?something to keep in mind for today's observance of World Oceans Day.
Signup and Setup
Both Windows and Mac versions of theBlu are available for download from theBlu.com. Internet Explorer's download protection warned that this is not a commonly installed app; bypass that if you see it. On the Mac, it's a PKG installer, which takes you through setup, but this still tells you to go into your System Preferences and set theBlu as your screensaver. On first run, you can either create an account or enter as a guest. You can sign in simply with a Facebook account. You can also sign up with a simple email registration. The app is technically a beta, but I only ran into the occasional, insignificant glitch.
Once you've got an account, you'll see account icons for famous people you can "follow" a la Twitter. Some of these include Richard Branson, Neil Young, and Queen Noor. You'll meet less lofty folk, too, as you wade through the app. You can then optionally fill out your profile; one box here asks "why do you love the oceans?" That's an easy one?body surfing. But seriously, who doesn't love the sea?
Then you're asked to invite friends. For each new signup you bring along, you'll earn a new rare fish. My first was the Pink Skunk, which actually is a fish rather than a mammal, as the name might suggest. I invited everyone on my Facebook friend list whose name started with an A and who I thought wouldn't be annoyed by the intrusion.
Interface
theBlu takes over your whole display when you launch it, giving you and undersea view of the ocean and playing soothing piano, string, and synth music. After setup and social connections, it's time to explore the deep. To do this, you simply click on species, and you may even decide to adopt one. Hitting Escape will take you right out of this world, by the way. There's a definite 3D video game feel to theBlu. There are levels, more advanced ones are locked, just as in Angry Birds. Just two settings choices are available: music off and show fish name. Showing the fish name is helpful, but takes away from the pure beauty of the scene.
I first traveled to My Habitat, though this wasn't the level I was in to start with. Turns out that My Habitat just contains fish you've purchased. I proceeded to the Coral Reef. It took a surprisingly long amount of travel time. After restarting the app, I was instantly in the Coral Reef. There I saw icons for buying, following. Along the bottom, status updates showed me other users' fish entering my little patch of coral reef. You can click on the user name to see her profile and pals.
A Next View icon let me circle around the reef, for looks from the other sides. Another button let me take a photo, which I could share to Facebook. My view wasn't still: It was more like I was floating in the water, my body swayed by the current and my breathing. The Follow Fish option was more enjoyable than just watching the reef from one spot: You could really enjoy the fish and feel more a part of the surroundings, and the fishes' movements were surprisingly realistic.
The Fish Store
It was time to get more involved. I headed to the Store, where I could choose among Featured, Spheres. Each fish is attached to an ocean nonprofit group, such as Mission Blue, Ocean Elders, and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. You get 100 credits to start with, and after that, you can purchase more, starting at $3 for 20 credits, all the way up to $250 for 5000 credits. A $19.99 Pro version of the app adds more species and habitats.
You also get Social Points whenever you connect to another user, for example by simply clicking on their fish. Once you accumulate 500 Social Points, you're awarded more credits for buying fish and entry to habitats. Clicking on a fish also lets you see its designers and programmers, as well as species info.
I bought a Clownfish. After a close up view, my fish entered the reef among other users'. He looked so small and vulnerable, but I couldn't yet afford a hammerhead shark.
You can also purchase other habitats, or "spheres." The selection is tempting; Open Water, The Deep, Outer Seychelles, Cliff, and Micro Habitat. I wanted to see some of those other habitats, so I plunked down my credit card for 100 points?it's that enticing. You can also simply donate, but taking part in the theBlu experience is more fun.
Whenever I bought a fish or habitat, the program suggested I share the fact on Facebook, which I did for the first couple of purchases. You can also snap photos from within the sea, and if you share these they'll appear in your Facebook photo galleries.
Dive In!
I really liked my time in theBlu, and plan on visiting again. It's an ongoing project, so future visits will yield new sights and species. Whether you use this game-like environment simply to enjoy the view, learn, or start supporting ocean causes, it's well worth the short time it takes to install, set up, and learn. So dive in, the water's fine!

A number of the performances are plain stunning - Aran and Joan, in particular, seem born to move - and in many ways watching the movie is like watching a sporting event; there are winners and losers and favorites to cheer on.
It's an intense journey, and Kargman captures it all, down to the dancers' bloodied and bruised feet.
Yes, it is possible to create a gripping documentary about the ballet world without resorting to "Black Swan" melodramatics.
Because its subjects are so driven and so talented, "First Position," which is about ballet, is more gripping than the norm.
It's in the quick audience-reaction shots of the young dancers' exultant parents and cringing private instructors that the movie finds its most nakedly human moments.
The film shows the grueling work it takes for young dancers like Zamora to look effortless on stage, and First Position shows teachers who range from supportive to borderline abusive.
It's a wealth of material at odds with a scant running time and shallow focus.
When it's over, you won't remember so much about who won and who lost. Instead, what remains is the expression on a young dancer's face, reflected in a mirror: showing the joy of being in love with what you do.
What we experience is the overwhelming thrill of the competition and the true agony of defeat.
It could very well compete for Best Documentary at next year's Academy Awards.
For someone (like me) who has never been to a ballet, the talent of these teens and tweens is a revelation.
It's 'Spartacus' en pointe.
Inspiring documentary about hardworking young dancers.
Almost loses its sense of good taste entirely in the final act, straining to build suspense and shape heroes. The bias hangs a little ugly in an otherwise passable, somewhat enlightening effort.
The cookie cutter format Kargman uses in presenting her subjects may be unoriginal but a safe way to introduce the filmmaker to her new audience.
Child ballet dancer and former journalist Bess Kargman brings a dancer's passion and insight to her directorial debut, illuminating the addictive magic and fierce demands of a ballet dancer's life.
Really, all of the dancers' evident passion for their art is, well, spellbinding.
These kids are proud of their tights.
Kargman follows the pre-established pattern of documentaries following competitions from crosswords to spelling bees, but the format works and she's found six kids ranging in age from 9 to 16 who are truly involving.
