Apple needs to redefine itself, but that shouldn't take long

Image
We know that Apple can be OCD-ish about dictionaries at times, but is any brave Cupertino intern ready to step up and run the gauntlet? Apple's definition of itself in its own Dictionary application is looking dusty, while all it really needs is a quick mention of the company's latest gifts to the world -- and we don't just mean the Patent Wars.

[Thanks, Ishmaeel]

Mayor: Cops resisted Zimmerman 911 tape release

George Zimmerman's brother spoke out for the first time Thursday night, defending his brother's actions in the killing of unarmed Florida teen Trayvon Martin and saying that medical records will back his account of the shooting. NBC's Ron Allen reports.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

SANFORD, Florida -- The mayor of the city where Trayvon Martin was killed says he overruled police and prosecutors who opposed the release of tapes of 911 calls, telling them: ?We're not here to hide anything.?

Jeff Triplett, who is a senior vice president at United Legacy Bank and part-time mayor of Sanford, said he took the decision after Martin?s family asked for the release of recordings of a call that shooter George Zimmerman made to police and 911 calls from neighbors who heard the confrontation.

Police, prosecutors and the city attorney opposed releasing the calls because of the ongoing investigation, Triplett told Reuters.

?Everyone was saying to me, no, no, no, don't turn them over," he said. "I just continually asked, 'Why wouldn't we do this?'"

"I made that call to try to settle everything down a little bit, to let the family hear what transpired. We were being accused of a lot of things, or the police department was, so we can take the step to say, 'We're not here to hide anything,'" Triplett added.

World is 'watching'
Triplett was governs a population of about 54,000, 30 percent of whom are black and have long complained bitterly about police mistreatment.

"I ran for office to make a better Sanford. And this comes on your plate, and it's just amazing," 43-year-old Triplett told Reuters in an interview.

"The decisions I'm trying to make, I could be not only held accountable for them from the city side but from the nation and the world that's watching right now," he added.

Spike Lee apologizes to Florida couple, agrees to pay for retweeting their address

Martin's death?has drawn international attention, spurred protests in American cities and prompted a federal review.

Triplett has had a mixed reaction: he has been booed off a stage, defended by black community leaders, and lectured on racial justice by civil rights activists.

He described how, on March 16, he invited Martin's family and lawyers to his office at City Hall to listen to the 911 calls prior to the public release. Natalie Jackson, an Orlando civil rights lawyer, was also present.

Martin's mother weeps
Triplett played the calls on his office computer. Someone was heard crying for help. Martin's mother wept and ran from the room, convinced it was her son, Jackson said. Everyone was moved to tears.

"It was very emotional," Triplett recalled. "Obviously when you hear something like that, there couldn't be anything worse for a family member or a parent ... and to hear your own son, what transpired at the last second."

Police video shows George Zimmerman shortly after Trayvon Martin shooting

Not everyone approves of Triplett's actions. Sanford City Commissioner Patty Mahany said she thought he meant well, but that he had drawn more attention to the case and the calls could influence jurors in any trial.

"I think it stirred up a lot of anger in very well-meaning people who still don't have the whole story," Mahany said.

Controversy surrounding the case deepened Thursday when surveillance video footage of George Zimmerman being led from a police car shortly after he fatally shot Martin appeared not to show any obvious signs of injuries or bloodstains.

The footage, obtained by ABC News, shows a handcuffed Zimmerman getting out of the police car unaided and walking into the police station.

In the video, there are no readily visible signs of injuries to Zimmerman's head or blood on his clothes. However,?he is wearing a red jacket, which could obscure blood stains. Also, at one point, an officer pauses to look at the back of Zimmerman's head, which he claims was injured by Martin.

Meanwhile, a college newspaper has apologized for publishing a cartoon about the Martin case after it received complaints, according to a report in the LA Times.

The editorial board of the University of Texas at Austin's Daily Texan said its decision to publish the cartoon ?showed a failure in judgment on the part of the editorial board?, adding that the cartoonist responsible, Stephanie Eisner, had left the paper.

SALES TRAINING COMPANIES -?DECIDING ON?THE SUITABLE?SALES TRAINING COMPANY FOR YOUR?TEAM

Deciding on the best?sales training in Wheeling?can certainly be a?difficult?process. ?Let?s?admit it,?there are?so many?sales training companies?from which to choose?in the Chicago?area! ?Perhaps?the initial??cut?you have to?make?would be to?disqualify?each of the?recently?out of place?salespeople?who have?put?out their shingles as sales trainers.?I am?pretty sure?most of them?have?reasonable?stories?as to why?these people were?dismissed,?however when?you are looking at?spending?extensive amounts of time, energy and profits of your company with a sales training company?then you better?search for?something?other than?a really good?story.

What Do?You?Genuinely?Want?

Sounds like?a basic?enough question,?on the other hand?our experience?tells us?that many?people?looking for a?sales training company?have not?truly?sat down, put pencil to paper and?discussed?what their?needed?final outcomes?are for the training?engagement.

For instance,?are you looking?to?encourage?your sales force??Make them learn?closing?strategies??Help them?handle?their time??Even though?all of these?are?valuable?goals and objectives,?perhaps even?combined?they won?t?bring you?the true?outcome?that you are required.?Believe it or not,?moving?down this?path?is likely to?end up in?your joining?nearly all?sales managers and?business owners?who?spend money on?their?sales force?only to?later?exclaim:

?Sales training?didn?t?succeed!

The Actual End Result?You Really Need?-?Measurable?Breakthroughs?in Selling?Techniques?and Selling?Successes

Short-term ?event?type?training and training that?concentrates on?just one or two?techniques?normally?does?not succeed?as it is?basically?defective. Our?experience and analysis?have shown?us?that your?sales force?is not likely?to?continuously?apply?even the?most effective?methods?or?recommendations?except when?they happen to be?part of?a complete?behavioral?development?plan.

Good?training?needs to be?far more than?an?informational?occasion?or maybe a?series of?events.?It has to?involve?skill application, progress measurement, feedback, optimization, and encouragement.

Generating?long lasting?selling?progress?requires?behavioral?adjustment?and?perfecting?new?strategies. This?absolutely?doesn?t occur?in a single day, over a?few days?or maybe?in a couple of?weeks.

Top 10 European Countries for Real Estate Property Investors ...

Follow Me on Pinterest

If you?re looking to diversify, broaden or even begin your property portfolio consider Europe for your next investment destination.

Europe is host to such a broad range of countries all offering diverse property opportunities ? you have everything from emerging market economies with massive potential for sharp growth rates, well established city based rental markets giving great yields and even residential housing markets offering an investor a slow burn on his capital outlay.

Here?s an overview of the potential on offer in the top ten European countries for real estate property investors right now.

Bulgaria ? Bulgaria is in position for EU accession in 2007 and as a result it is receiving massive foreign and domestic investment particularly into infrastructure and construction and the whole country is benefiting from the amount of money being spent on it.

Those who buy now in Bulgaria are buying into the longest projected period of growth and buying before the expected boom that will begin when Bulgaria is officially made an EU Member State. Furthermore they are buying to target the burgeoning tourism market that heads for the beautiful beaches of the Black Sea Coast in the summer and the snow capped mountains of Bulgaria?s ski resorts in the winter.

Croatia ? Another country tipped for full EU membership in 2007, Croatia offers property investors commercial and residential property opportunities. The numbers of international business establishing bases in Croatia has increased substantially in the last couple of years and there is demand for the development of light industrial and office space.

Furthermore Croatia has a strong tourism market that offers a real estate investor further opportunity to either target short term rental yields or to buy off plan or develop for resale to the second and holiday home market in Croatia.

Cyprus ? There are two real estate economies in Cyprus ? you have the well established Republic of Cyprus property market where an investor should seek to target the retiree audience or the tourism market and then in Northern Cyrus you have an emerging economy currently offering massive growth potential.

Property price increases in North Cyprus have consistently been in double digits for the past three years and there are no signs of a slow down in the offing.

Czech Republic ? The majority of real estate investors consider Prague the only city worth targeting in the Czech Republic but the country?s other cities like Brno also offer an investor opportunity to purchase residential accommodation for rent to the domestic and expatriate professional population. Property price growth has been fantastic in recent years and rental rates are increasing annually.

Estonia ? Real estate investors should target the local market in Estonia and consider looking for opportunities in the capital city of Tallinn. The Estonian economy is growing at a staggering rate which is affording the local people greater purchasing power which in turn is having a direct effect on the property market in Estonia.

Basically as local demand increases so prices can rise and as local purchasing power increases so it can sustain these price rises. A real estate investor can buy into this growth now and should expect the period of growth to be sustainable for at least the medium term.

Hungary ? Property investors who targeted Hungary?s capital city of Budapest last year enjoyed up to 15% growth on underlying property prices and these growth rates show no sign of slowing down currently.

There is local and expatriate demand for property to buy and let in Budapest and the local economy is benefiting from foreign direct investment and strengthening. This means that there are long term prospect for growth in Hungary. Furthermore there?s an emerging market within Hungary?s property sector and that is the tourism market which offers an investor a chance to get in on both residential and commercial property ventures targeting this growing market segment.

Latvia ? Latvia is benefiting from substantial foreign direct investment which has helped establish the Latvian economy as one of the fastest growing in Europe and Latvians are on target to receive one of the five largest wage increases in the world. All this means that locally the population can afford to spend more on property either in the form of rental rates payable or property prices payable and real estate investors can buy off plan and flip on to the local market upon completion or even buy to let out in the capital city of Riga or in the coastal port towns.

Poland ? Having joined the European Union back in 2004 Poland has received massive aid and investment as a result which has improved the country?s infrastructure incredibly and led to a strong period of economic growth.

Many European and international companies have established bases in Warsaw and Krakow and the demand for accommodation in these cities alone has really soared. Real estate investors are targeting Poland because it offers a low risk, high potential property market. Furthermore investor confidence in Poland is high because the Polish government have already proved that they have a strong commitment to maintaining the good economic growth rates that their country is currently enjoying.

Romania ? Because Romania has yet to join the EU and align all its governmental, fiscal and constitutional policies with those of Europe it is quite a tricky country for a foreign investor to get in on. However it offers a real estate investor such exciting opportunities ? where else in the world can you buy anything and everything from a castle to a factory at such ridiculously low prices.

Those with a strong appetite for paperwork and red tape will make their fortunes from Romania?s property market, but for the rest of us it?s an economy to watch carefully. As the country moves slowly towards EU membership so it will become easier and more attractive for property investors to target.

Turkey ? Turkey is on track for EU accession following agreement that it should begin accession talks in 2005. Since that point Turkey?s economy has been granted ?Market Economy? status, the country has received billions of dollars of Middle Eastern funds into its property sector and world wide investor interest in Turkey?s property market has exploded.

The majority of opportunities either exist in Istanbul or along Turkey?s southern coastline where hundreds of thousands of tourists flock every year. Prices for property in Turkey are currently incredibly low so with all the positive data and news coming from Turkey recently there is only one way prices are going to go ? and that?s up!

There are so many opportunities available to an investor in Europe that those serious about profiting from real estate property should give the continent careful consideration!

(AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI wrapped up his visit to Cuba on Wednesday with a Mass before hundreds of thousands of people in the shrine of the Cuban revolution, hoping to revive the Catholic faith in this communist-run country and press for greater freedoms for his church.

It was a message he was likely to repeat at his other appointment Wednesday: a meeting with Fidel Castro.

Multitudes of Cubans filled Revolution Plaza for the morning Mass, shielding themselves from the blistering sun with umbrellas and waving flags big and small as Benedict passed by in his white popemobile. President Raul Castro and leading Cabinet officials had front-row seats, wearing white formal guayabera shirts.

"Viva Cuba! Viva el Papa!" the announcers shouted.

"The pope is something big for Cubans," said Carlos Herrera, a tourism worker who came to the plaza with his wife. "I come to hear his words, wise words for the Cuban people. That helps us. It gives us peace, it gives us unity. We do not want war."

But other suggested they were here for less than religious sentiment, told to attend by their employers in a country where mass shows of support for Fidel Castro have long been a mainstay of his half-century revolution.

"I'm here to support the leaders of our government, to support our revolution," said Dioleisis Fontela, a university professor.

In the days leading up to the pope's visit, some Cubans had said they resented that the government was now telling them to attend the Mass, despite preaching atheism until the early 1990s, and remaining skeptical about the church's role in society.

This time, a huge poster of Cuba's patron saint, the Virgin of Charity of Cobre, covered the facade of one of the buildings facing the plaza near Che. The icon has been the spiritual focus of Benedict's three-day visit, timed to coincide with the 400th anniversary of the appearance of the diminutive statue.

Benedict visited the statue in a sanctuary near the eastern city of Santiago on Tuesday morning and prayed to her for greater freedom and renewal for all Cubans ? another gentle nudge to the government to continue opening itself up to greater reforms.

"I have entrusted to the Mother of God the future of your country, advancing along the ways of renewal and hope, for the greater good of all Cubans," the pope said. "I have also prayed to the Virgin for the needs of those who suffer, of those who are deprived of freedom, those who are separated from their loved ones or who are undergoing times of difficulty."

A top official in Havana quickly responded: "In Cuba, there will not be political reform," said Vice President Marino Murillo, Cuba's economic czar.

Before arriving on his trip to Mexico and Cuba, Benedict asserted that Marxism as it was originally conceived is irrelevant for today's reality. Upon arriving on Cuban soil, however, his language was less direct, and he pressed instead for the Roman Catholic Church to play a greater role in Cuban life and for Cuba's people to enjoy greater freedoms.

The Vatican spokesman said the Holy See didn't take Murillo's comments as a rebuff to Benedict's call, noting that the pope isn't a political leader who can change laws or political systems. But he said Benedict does have some concrete hopes for the visit.

Ahead of the Mass, dissident blogs and Twitter accounts carried allegations that members of the Ladies in White opposition group had been prevented from attending, and that some opposition leaders were detained, reports that were reiterated by Amnesty International.

It was impossible to reach any of the group's leading members on Wednesday. Elizardo Sanchez, who monitors human rights on the island and acts as a de facto spokesman for the opposition, said he could not confirm any detentions because his mobile phone hadn't worked since shortly after the pope arrived on Monday. It was an experience shared by many other islanders and foreign journalists who could not make calls on jammed lines.

The Ladies were allowed to march peacefully the day before the pope arrived, but dozens were arrested in a similar march the week before.

During a nearly hour-long meeting Tuesday with Cuban President Raul Castro ? twice the normal length of papal audiences with heads of state ? Benedict asked that the government declare a holiday for Good Friday, when Catholics commemorate the death of Christ.

The request, like so much of this trip, was a follow-up of sorts to Cuba's decision to declare Christmas a national holiday in honor of John Paul's 1998 visit. Cubans hadn't had Christmas off for nearly 30 years.

"It's not that it changes reality in a revolutionary way, but it can be a sign of a positive step, as was the case of Christmas after John Paul's visit," said the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi.

The government didn't give an immediate response, but Lombardi said it was natural for Cuba to take time to consider it. The government frequently declares holidays at the last minute, and Good Friday this year comes in less than two weeks, on April 6.

Benedict also raised "humanitarian" issues with Raul Castro, an apparent reference to political prisoners. Lombardi said he didn't know if individual cases were discussed.

Primarily, though, Benedict came to Cuba to try to win a greater place in society for the Catholic Church, which has been marginalized in the six decades of Castro family rule.

The island's Communist government never outlawed religion, but it expelled priests and closed religious schools after Fidel Castro came to power in 1959. Tensions eased in the early 1990s when the government removed references to atheism in the constitution and let believers of all faiths join the Communist Party.

John Paul's 1998 visit further warmed relations. But despite years of lobbying, the church has virtually no access to state-run radio or television, is not allowed to administer schools and has not been granted permission to build new places of worship. Only about 10 percent of Cubans are practicing Catholics.

"Naturally a papal visit hopes to be an impulse for further steps, be it for the life of the church or for the good of society in its entirety," Lombardi told reporters, citing media, education and health care as areas where the church wants a greater say.

But in a country that once preached atheism and still is dominated by Marxist thought, that's a hard sell for the government and for ordinary Cubans alike.

Ana Blanco, a 47-year-old Havana resident, complained that people were being told to attend Wednesday's Mass, saying the pressure seemed odd in a country that in her early years taught her religion was wrong.

"Now there's this visit by the pope, and I don't agree with giving it so much importance or making anyone go to the Mass or other activities," the office worker said. "Before it was bad, now it's good. That creates confusion."

A hidden architecture: Researchers use novel methods to uncover gene mutations for common diseases

ScienceDaily (Mar. 25, 2012) ? Human geneticists have long debated whether the genetic risk of the most common medical conditions derive from many rare mutations, each conferring a high degree of risk in different people, or common differences throughout the genome that modestly influence risk.

A new study by Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) researchers has harnessed data and new analysis tools to address this question in four common diseases: rheumatoid arthritis; celiac disease; coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction (heart attack); and type 2 diabetes.

The study will be electronically published on March 25, 2012 in Nature Genetics.

The researchers developed a new statistical method built upon "polygenic risk score analysis" to estimate the heritable component of these diseases that is explained by common differences throughout the genome.

Their method takes advantage of data from previously published genome-wide association studies, or GWAS, an approach used to scan DNA samples for common genetic markers seen throughout the population-called SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms).

According to senior author Robert Plenge, MD, PhD, BWH director of Genetics and Genomics in the Division of Rheumatology, Immunology and Allergy, "We used GWAS data and a Bayesian statistical framework to demonstrate that a substantial amount of risk to these four common diseases is due to hundreds of loci that harbor common causal variants with small effect, as well as a smaller number of loci that harbor rare causal variants."

Using data on rheumatoid arthritis, they estimated that variation in hundreds of locations throughout the genome might explain 20 percent of rheumatoid arthritis risk, after excluding all of the known rheumatoid arthritis genetic risk factors.

They used computer simulations to demonstrate that the underlying genetic risk in rheumatoid arthritis is largely explained by many common alleles rather than rare mutations.

They observed similar results for celiac disease (43 percent), myocardial infarction (48 percent) and type 2 diabetes (49 percent).

"What is remarkable is that our statistical model was broadly applicable to several common diseases, not just rheumatoid arthritis," said Plenge, who is also an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School and an associate member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. "Our study provides a clear strategy for discovering additional risk alleles for these and likely many other common diseases."

According to the researchers, these methods can be applied to other genome-wide datasets (e.g., GWAS or whole genome sequencing) to estimate the degree to which there is a genetic component.

One exciting possibility is assessing the genetic basis of individual response to drugs.

"Our method may be particularly useful for diseases and related traits that cannot be easily studied in families," said Eli Stahl, PhD, lead study author, BWH research associate and member of the National Institutes of Health-funded Pharmacogenomic Research Network (PGRN). "For traits such as treatment efficacy or toxicity, we often assume there is a genetic basis to the clinical variability observed among patients. Now, we have the statistical tools to quantify the extent to which this is the case directly."

"Our study reinforces a common thread in the literature, that many subtle differences throughout the genome explain much of the differences in risk for individuals for all kinds of diseases-this has powerful implications for the genetic architecture of disease, for risk prediction and prognosis, as well as for basic biology and developing new drug targets," said co-senior author Soumya Raychaudhuri, MD, PhD, BWH Division of Immunology, Allergy and Rheumatology, assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

(AP) ? Thomas Robinson kept missing easy buckets. Tyshawn Taylor had a shooting performance he'd rather soon forget. Kansas made just two shots from outside 5 feet, and seemed to be in constant trouble against North Carolina State.

Yet a smile kept creeping across Robinson's face. Taylor spent most of the second half Friday night trying to calm down coach Bill Self, who was stomping along the Jayhawks' sideline.

"We haven't been a picture-perfect team all season," Self said later, "but that's one thing that's exciting. The guys take pride in not being perfect. They take pride in winning ugly."

They certainly won a muddy brawl against the Wolfpack.

Robinson had 18 points and 15 rebounds, Jeff Withey blocked 10 shots to finish one shy of the NCAA tournament record, and the second-seeded Jayhawks held on for a 60-57 victory. They advanced to play top-seeded North Carolina, led by former coach Roy Williams, which escaped with a 73-65 overtime victory over No. 13 seed Ohio earlier in the night.

All the upstarts have headed home.

It's the bluest of the bluebloods in a Sunday showdown for the Final Four.

"They're a great team, great coach, great program," Robinson said. "It's two great programs and when we do meet, I'm pretty sure it's going to go down as a big one."

It figures to be a little more sexy than their game against the Wolfpack.

Both teams struggled to make shots, run offense and get into a flow. Kansas (30-6) even squandered an eight-point lead in the final few minutes, failing to wrap up the win until Richard Howell's off-balance heave at the buzzer came up well short.

"The guys are tough. They're tough," Self said. "They find a way."

C.J. Leslie had 18 points to lead N.C. State (24-13), despite sitting much of the second half with four fouls. Scott Wood finished with 12 points on 2-for-10 shooting, though his biggest error wasn't a missed shot but the shot he never even got to attempt.

N.C. State had pulled within 58-57 on a transition layup by C.J. Williams with just over a minute remaining. The teams swapped possessions before Kansas managed to get a layup from Elijah Johnson off an inbound pass from Taylor with 13.5 seconds left.

The Wolfpack crossed midcourt and called a timeout to set up a play, which was designed to get the ball to Wood off a baseline pass. Instead, a skip pass went high and the sharpshooter stepped out of bounds trying to pull it in, giving the ball back to Kansas with 5 seconds to go.

Robinson was fouled and missed the free throw at the other end, but a pass down court and Howell's tightly guarded shot at the buzzer came up nowhere close, allowing Kansas to escape.

"We did not execute very well. The end of the day, that's my responsibility," Gottfried said.

Johnson finished with 11 points for the Jayhawks, who moved on despite a lousy performance by Taylor. Their second-leading scorer had six points on 2-for-14 shooting.

Kansas was just 1 for 14 from beyond the arc as a team.

"It gets frustrating, but I can't hang my head and get down. I've just got to be able to do other things to help my team win," said Taylor, who still managed 10 rebounds and five assists.

The Wolfpack took a page from Purdue's playbook over the first eight minutes, using constant double teams on Robinson inside and forcing Kansas to settle for jump shots.

They didn't go in, at least early on.

Just as they did against the Boilermakers last weekend, Kansas struggled to gain traction, and Leslie took advantage by scoring five of his 12 first-half points during an opening salvo.

Williams' 3-pointer gave the Wolfpack a 17-11 lead ? their biggest of the half.

Kansas eventually clawed back, relying on defense during a 12-0 run. Withey provided most of it inside with seven blocks in the first half.

"I was just in a zone," he said. "After the first block I just got in a rhythm."

Leslie answered with back-to-back baskets for N.C. State, and his bucket on the heels of a 3-pointer by Wood gave the Wolfpack a 33-32 lead at the break ? their last lead of the game.

Johnson, who provided the big shots that allowed Kansas to reach St. Louis, hit his only 3-pointer of the game out of halftime. It was the start of a 12-2 run during which Leslie was forced to the bench with four fouls and nearly 16 minutes still on the clock.

"It was a very physical game. They're very active coming over and helping," he said.

Kansas extended the lead to 50-40 when Taylor lobbed a pass to Withey for an alley-oop dunk, and a partisan crowd inside the Edward Jones Dome roared in approval.

Leslie finally checked back in with less than 7 minutes left, giving N.C. State a brief boost. But moments later he was back on the floor as trainers appeared to work on a cramp, and Kansas pounded away inside before he checked back into the game.

The lead was 58-50 with just over 3 minutes remaining, and Kansas managed to hold on during a furious final stretch to reach another regional final ? and earn a date with the Tar Heels.

"We didn't shoot the ball really great. To get the win feels really good," Withey said. "It was all defense, and we're dancing. We're still in the NCAA tournament."

Sony VAIO VPC-EH35FM/B

Any color you want as long as it's black? Best Buy's website lists the Sony VAIO VPC-EH35FM/B (the /B means in black) for $629.99, along with the EH35FM/P in pink and EH35FM/W in white, but indicates the latter two are sold out at this writing. If you have your heart set on white or pink, the identically configured VAIO VPC-EH37FX is $719.99 on Sony's own site. Even that's not a bad deal for an attractive 15.5-inch desktop replacement laptop with perky Intel Core i5 power, 6GB of RAM, and a 640GB hard disk, as long as you can overlook one cost-cutting measure: Really, Sony, no USB 3.0 port in this day and age?

Design
Measuring 1.5 by 14.6 by 9.8 inches and weighing 5.2 pounds, the Sony VAIO VPC-EH35FM/B is cased in black plastic, with a handsome diamond-embossed pattern on the lid and palm rest that nevertheless picked up a few finger smudges on our test unit. If you don't like the black keyboard, our test unit came with a blue silicone keyboard skin that increased spill and crumb resistance without subtracting from the keyboard's slightly spongy yet comfortable typing feel. There's a full-sized numeric keypad with dedicated Home, End, PgUp, and PgDn keys (although they, the function and Delete keys, and the cursor arrows are slightly smaller than the regular keys), and a medium-sized touchpad with a nicely textured surface and clicky mouse buttons.

The screen resolution is the boilerplate 1,366-by-768 you'll find on most other 15- (and 14- and 13-inch) laptops?for this price, you shouldn't expect the 1,920 by 1,080 of Sony's 4.4-pound VAIO VPC-SE23FX/S ($999 direct, 4 stars) or the HP Envy 15 (2012) ($1,249.99 direct, 4 stars). That's enough for viewing 720p videos from the Web; you can't watch them from a Blu-ray disc because the VPC-EH35FM/B has a DVD?RW drive. The screen is clear and bright, with adequate viewing angles and vivid colors (and no, our eyes couldn't see the difference between the Sony's 15.5- and competitors' 15.6-inch panels, and we bet yours can't either). Audio through the built-in speakers is average.

Features
The VAIO VPC-EH35FM/B doesn't have the WiMAX mobile broadband found in our Editors' Choice Asus U56E-BBL6, nor the Bluetooth technology used to sync a laptop and handheld. But it has two other wireless features: the familiar 802.11n Wi-Fi, which worked fine in our surfing and downloading tests, and Intel's Wireless Display (WiDi) for streaming the laptop's video and audio to an HDTV set equipped with a $100-or-so Belkin or Netgear adapter.

There are two memory-card slots on the Sony's front bezel, one for SD cards and the other for the company's Memory Stick Pro Duo format. On the right side of the chassis are three USB 2.0 ports and the DVD drive. On the left are VGA, HDMI, and Ethernet ports; microphone and headphone jacks; and a fourth USB 2.0 port?we looked for the blue connector or SS (Super Speed) label that designates a USB 3.0 port, but were disappointed.

By contrast, only a grouch could be disappointed that the VPC-EH35FM/B's 5,400-rpm hard drive is an ample 640GB instead of the even more ample 750GB of models like the Lenovo IdeaPad Z570-10249ZU ($699.99 list, 3.5 stars) and Asus K53SD-DS51 ($779.99 street, 3 stars). Sony preloads it with a Mac OS Dock-alike program launcher dubbed VAIO Gate, a couple of photo and video managers, and a scanty 30-day trial of Norton Internet Security.

Sony backs the laptop with a one-year warranty with on-site or at-home service. Best Buy offers a choice of two-year extended service plans: a $149.99 deal that covers normal wear and tear, power surges, a single replacement of a dead battery, and "no lemon" replacement of a system that's required four repairs; and a $269.99 plan with the above plus drop and spill protection.

Performance
Sony VAIO VPC-EH35FM/B Equipped with a 2.5GHz Intel Core i5-2450M processor and 6GB of RAM, the Sony VAIO VPC-EH35FM/B did well in our productivity benchmark tests. Its PCMark 7 performance score of 2,400 edged that of the Acer Aspire TimelineX 5830TG-6614 ($779.99 list, 4 stars) (2,388) and Asus U56E-BBL6 (2,255).

Sony VAIO VPC-EH35FM/B

It tied the Asus K53SD-DS51, based on the same CPU, in our Handbrake (1 minute 47 seconds) and Photoshop CS5 (3 minutes 55 seconds) multimedia tests. Only on the graphics front did the Sony's Intel HD Graphics 3000 integrated graphics prove no match for the Nvidia GeForce GT 540M of the Acer 5830TG-6614: The latter posted 58 and 39 frames per second respectively in Crysis and Lost Planet 2 versus the VAIO's 19 fps in each.

The Sony's 44Wh battery proved a slight disappointment, falling just short of the five-hour mark that we consider a fair result for a desktop replacement system (4 hours 53 minutes). By contrast, the Asus U56E-BBL6 lasted 7 hours 42 minutes and the Acer 5830TG-6614 a full nine hours.

Still, before we gripe too much about its battery life or that missing USB 3.0 port, it's worth remembering that the VPC-EH35FM/B is priced $100 or more below most of its competitors. At $629.99, it's a worthy alternative to our Editors' Choice Asus U56E-BBL6 and other top value contenders.

If a debt collector is asking you for money, try negotiating with them. They bought your debt from the originating company at a discount. For this reason many will accept an amount less than what was originally owed. Get rid of your debt for much less using this in your facor.

It is helpful to take along an envelope with you when you are shopping. You can store receipts, business cards, and other important items in it. It?s a great way to capture these items in a safe place to record them later on. You may need them to compare to your credit card statements in the small chance that you are double charged.

You can always put your finances in order; there is no point where it is too late to do this. No matter when you start, there will be a point down the road where you?ll be better off than if you let the matter slide. Jumping in, whereever you are, and getting your finances managed is important, and any little step counts.

When looking to get a home loan, you want to have a 740 for your FICO score. If this is your credit score, you will be able to get a good interest rate on your mortgage. You will have to spend time repairing your credit score. If your credit score is low, don?t apply for a mortgage unless it is necessary.

As evidenced here, having control of your finances is an important thing. Your financial position can be reformed by using the advice above. You will be empowered to manage your own finances, achieve your financial goals and make wise spending and saving decisions.
