Rivals try to slow Romney (Politico)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Mitt Romney is under direct attack on the airwaves for the first time in the 2012 presidential primary, as a super PAC supporting Jon Huntsman?s underdog campaign launches television ads in New Hampshire searing Romney as a political ?chameleon.?

The commercials from Our Destiny PAC are the sharpest yet directed at Romney, whose primary foes have largely avoided hitting him through paid media. An official with the group said the buy for the commercials is roughly $300,000 for broadcast and cable television.

?Two serious candidates remain. One willing to say anything, be anything. One who can actually do the job,? the ad?s narrator says, urging Granite State voters to ?stop the chameleon. Vote Jon Huntsman.?

The ads come at a moment when the effort to stop Romney increasingly appears to be too disorganized and slow-moving to deny the former Massachusetts governor a victory in New Hampshire and possibly the larger prize of the GOP nomination. The New Hampshire primary is now 11 days away and Romney?s poll numbers in the state are stronger than ever.

Indeed, with only days left until the Iowa caucuses, Romney wrapped up a bus tour here on a triumphant note, with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie exhorting voters to support Romney or else Christie would ?be back, Jersey style.?

And though Romney?s GOP opponents have sniped at him throughout the week, the heaviest incoming fire has continued to come from Democrats. Friday was no exception, as the Democratic National Committee released a web video criticizing Romney for not releasing his tax returns, and the Obama campaign pounced on an off-message remark by one of Romney?s sons to accuse him of pandering to the political fringe.

During a campaign stop in New Hampshire, Matt Romney was caught on-camera by the website Patch joking that his father might release his tax returns if the president ?releases his grades, and birth certificate, and sort of a long list of things.?

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina responded in a tone of outrage, writing in a fundraising email to supporters: ?This is how the Romney campaign thinks it?s going to win the Republican primary: by pandering to the dead-ender fringe of extremists who still question where the President was born.?

My New Year's Is 62 Million Times Bigger Than Yours, Said The Man From Beijing

The New Year comes, of course, at midnight. But because we have different time zones, we have many different midnights and some are much more crowded than others.

This morning I asked myself: who's got the biggest New Year's Eve on earth? By which I mean: which time zone has the most people in it. And the answer is clear.

If you look at this world time zone map, one zone, which we've highlighted it in yellow has, as you can see, all of China, all 1.3 billion of 'em, plus a hunk of Siberia, plus Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, a chunk of Indonesia, Timor and a cut of Australia. Altogether, that's got to be at least 1.5 billion people who will greet 2012 at the very same moment.

Party-wise (assuming Confucian cultures pay our New Year's eve any mind, and I think they do), this is the hot and poppin' New Year's Eve Zone on our planet, bigger than the zone that transects Western Europe and Africa, bigger than anything in the Americas.

For Those Who Don't Go Out on New Year's...

But maybe you're the quiet type. Maybe you don't like a lot of noise and merry making on what is a purely odometer-like occasion. And maybe you are looking for a time zone that is next to empty where there's nobody around to irritate you. Well, I think we've got a zone for you.

This zone is two zones west of the Greenwich meridian. It is mostly empty ocean.

Yes, it does contain a hunk of Greenland, a bit of Brazil, and a few Atlantic islands (the Azores) but all those places have chosen ? and passed laws, attaching themselves to other time zones. They've opted out. So not a lot of people live in this zone's time. It's a vast stretch of uninhabited Atlantic, populated only by fish and whales who don't have, I presume, a special feel for Decembers or Januaries or clocks or midnights. It does, down near Antarctica, include two little dots of land: the South Georgia and the South Sandwich islands, but they don't, either of them, have many inhabitants. One website I looked at estimates a research population of about 24 people, in the summer months (which is around now).

No Need For Velvet Ropes

Meaning, if you invited everybody in this time zone (not including transient boat traffic, penguins or seals), the biggest crowd you could hope for is two dozen people.

So there you have it, two very different zones for different temperaments. And the differences aren't trivial: 1.5 billion people here, 24 people there.

That's the Chinese advantage over South Sandwich Island. Their zone has 62.5 million times more people. But here's the South Sandwich advantage (for shy people): their zone is 62.5 million times less crowded. Whichever way you like it, happy New Year!

Offshore shell companies facilitate Florida land scams

Florida is the No. 1 state in the country for international residential real estate sales with almost one-third of the nation's foreign-backed property transactions.

Most deals are in cash.

However, Florida and the federal government may be left holding the bag, according to an investigative report from the Florida News Connection.

Some investors in the Florida housing market have found a way to avoid paying everything from state title transfer fees to federal capital gains taxes by going off-shore to places like a Caribbean island called Nevis.

The domestic housing bust made Florida properties appealing to overseas investors wanting to buy a house or condo in the Sunshine State, and 76 percent pay in cash. State and federal governments normally would get their cut of each transaction in fees and capital gains taxes.

A loophole is created when investors set up a shell company in an off-shore tax haven to buy a Florida condo.

R.M. Woodnutt, a former off-shore agent in Gibraltar, said tax avoidance is the name of the game.

"If you transfer the stock in the offshore company and do not actually sell the company or the real estate property outright, then you certainly avoid paying any taxes on the transaction. That is the beauty of all this," Woodruff said.

The Miami International Real Estate Congress claims foreign investment in South Florida is growing, and industry experts are predicting in 2012 there will be even more international interest in the area.

Creating an offshore company is simple, and can be done online: OffshoreFormations247.com specializes in creating shell companies to hide individual identities and assets. It is based in Nevis, a little Caribbean island just 200 miles south of Puerto Rico.

"A lot of people like Nevis 'cause it's quick and easy: three- to five-day turnaround to get a company back. For an LLC it costs only $1,295, a corporation is only $1,695. The only thing you need is name of the company, who the director will be and where to send it."

The offshore company buys the property in Florida. When it goes to unload it, the bearer certificates of company ownership are transferred to the new owners. There is no record in Florida of a sell-buy transaction, so no transfer fees or capital gains taxes are ever paid.

Rosa Schecter, an international real estate attorney in Coral Gables, said buying Florida property normally requires slogging through a lot of red tape and paying thousands in taxes and fees.

"There are different kinds of taxes," Schecter said. "There are transfer taxes that are associated with every real estate transaction in Florida that you have to pay on a deed; there also are intangible taxes that are due on promissory notes, and documentary stamp taxes. If a property is sold and there is gain on it, obviously there is tax to be paid on that gain."

Such taxes and fees are never recorded because as far as Florida is concerned, the property never changed hands - the deed is still recorded in the offshore company's name. What did change hands was the stock in the offshore company, a transaction that need not be disclosed.

Most overseas buyers do not qualify for an exemption from capital gains taxes since the properties are not usually their primary residence. Forming an offshore company to purchase a house in Florida hides any record of the property changing hands, thus no capital gains are recorded on the tax rolls.

There are advantages for American citizens, too, like dodging debts, child support or alimony payments.

Several state and federal law enforcement agencies have been made aware of this off-shore scheme.

Kim Jong Il's heir meets with SKorean delegation (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? North Korea's next leader burnished his diplomatic skills, welcoming a private South Korean mourning delegation as state media called Kim Jong Un a "sagacious" leader and revealed a new title that gives him authority over political matters.

Kim Jong Un has rapidly gained prominence since the death of his father, Kim Jong Il, on Dec. 17, and his brief meeting with a group led by a former South Korean first lady and a prominent business leader shows Seoul that he is assured in his new role.

State media have showered Kim with new titles. On Saturday, the North referred to him as "supreme leader" of the 1.2 million-strong armed forces and said the military's top leaders had pledged their loyalty to him. On Monday, the Rodong Sinmun newspaper described him as head of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party ? a post that appears to make him the top official in the ruling party.

Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency also called Kim Jong Un a "sagacious leader" and "dear" comrade while reporting that he paid respects Monday to his father, whose body is lying in state at Kumsusan Memorial Palace. State media have already dubbed him as a "great successor" and an "outstanding leader."

It was the fourth time the North's media reported that the younger Kim had visited the memorial palace since his father's death, according to Seoul's Unification Ministry.

Also on Monday, a South Korean delegation stood in a line on a red carpet and bowed silently during their visit to the Kumsusan palace, where Kim's bier is surrounded by flowers and flanked by an honor guard.

Kim Jong Un gave the South Koreans his thanks after they expressed condolences and sympathy, KCNA said. Seoul's Unification Ministry confirmed the meeting in a statement but didn't elaborate.

The lead delegates were the widow of former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung, who engineered a "sunshine" engagement policy with the North and held a landmark summit with Kim Jong Il in 2000, and Hyundai Group Chairwoman Hyun Jeong-eun, whose late husband had ties to the North.

Their meeting with Kim Jong Un could be intended to push South Korea to pursue previously agreed upon cooperative projects that would give North Korea much-needed hard currency, said Yang Moo-jin, a professor at Seoul-based University of North Korean Studies.

Footage from AP Television News in North Korea earlier showed the South Koreans being greeted by North Korean officials during a stop at a factory park in the North Korean border town of Kaesong. North Korea sent delegations to Seoul when the women's husbands died.

Monday's meeting appeared to be Kim Jong Un's first reported meeting with South Koreans since his father's death.

The Kim family has extended its control over the country of 24 million people to a third generation with Kim Jong Un, who is in his late 20s and was revealed last year as his father's choice among three sons for successor.

Kim Jong Il, who ruled North Korea for 17 years, wielded power as head of three main state organs: the Workers' Party, the Korean People's Army and the National Defense Commission. His father, North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, remains the nation's "eternal president" long after his 1994 death.

Kim Jong Un was named a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party last year, but was expected to ascend to new military and political posts while being groomed to become the next leader.

Monday's reference to his new title was in a commentary in the Rodong Sinmun newspaper, the mouthpiece of the Workers' Party, urging soldiers to dedicate their lives "to protect the party's Central Committee headed by respected Comrade Kim Jong Un." Rodong Sinmun has also called on the people to become "eternal revolutionary comrades" with Kim Jong Un, "the sun of the 21st century."

The language echoed slogans used for years to rally support for Kim Jong Il, and made clear that the son is quickly moving toward leadership of the Workers' Party, one of the country's highest positions, in addition to the military.

North Korea refers to Kim Il Sung as the "sun" of the nation, and his birthday is celebrated as the "Day of the Sun." State media have sought to emphasize Kim Jong Un's role in carrying out the Kim family legacy throughout his succession movement.

His titles are slight variations of those held by his father, but appear to carry the same weight. It was unclear whether the nation's constitution had been changed to reflect the transfer of leadership as when Kim Jong Il took power after his father's death.

Mourning continued, meanwhile, despite frigid winter weather, in the final days before Kim Jong Il's funeral, which is set to take place Wednesday, and a memorial Thursday.

People continued lining up Monday in central Pyongyang's Kim Il Sung Square, where a massive portrait that usually features Kim Il Sung has been replaced by one of Kim Jong Il, to bow before his smiling image and to lay funeral flowers. Heated buses stood by to give mourners a respite from the cold, and hot tea and water were distributed from beverage kiosks.

Parade kicks off Kwanzaa celebration in LA

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The seven-day African-American festival of Kwanzaa is getting under way with a parade in Los Angeles.

City News Service reports that the parade will start at noon Monday at Crenshaw and Adams Boulevards and end in a festival at Leimert Park.

The festival was created in 1966 by Maulana Karenga in what he called "an audacious act of self-determination." Karenga now chairs the department of Africana Studies at California State University, Long Beach.

Kwanzaa focuses on seven principles including unity, purpose and faith. African foods such as millet, spiced pepper balls and rice are often served.

Karenga writes in an annual message that the festival's 45th anniversary highlights the community's commitment to self-determination and cultural reaffirmation.

Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu vows to stop harassment by Jewish zealots

JERUSALEM: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stepped up pledges to curb Jewish zealotry in Israel on Sunday after an 8-year-old girl complained of being menaced by ultra-Orthodox men who deemed her dress immodest.

While his conservative government insists such incidents are fringe phenomena in the mostly secular country, Netanyahu's repeated announcements on the matter reflected concern about widening religious and political schisms.

"In a Western, liberal democracy, the public realm is open and safe for all, men and women both, and neither harassment nor discrimination have any place there," he told his cabinet in broadcast remarks.

Netanyahu said he had ordered law enforcement authorities to crack down on "whoever spits, whoever lifts a hand (in violence), whoever harasses" and to remove street signs segregating men from women in some ultra-Orthodox districts.

The statement appeared to have been prompted by an expose on Israel's top-rated weekend news about intra-Jewish friction in Beit Shemesh, a town of about 87,000 people near Jerusalem.

Naama Margolese, 8, told Channel Two television she was terrified of walking to her moderate Orthodox school because of passersby who want her "to dress like a Haredi" - the Hebrew term for the ascetic, black-coated Jews who are in "awe" of God.

"I'm afraid I might get hurt or something," the girl said. Margolese's mother Hadassa, an American immigrant who wore a headscarf and skirt in deference to religious Jewish tradition, said the sidewalk abuse could include spitting, curses like "whores" and "bastards" and calls to "clear out of here".

"If that's what happens now, and they (authorities) don't do anything, what will happen in another few years?" she told Israel's Army Radio on Sunday. "This is a terrorist group."

Returning to Beit Shemesh on Sunday, a Channel Two crew was mobbed by ultra-Orthodox Jews who stoned their car, wounded a reporter and stole equipment, police said. The crew was rescued by police, who said they were questioning suspected assailants.

Separately, police said they had arrested a Beit Shemesh man for spitting at a woman, and that he could face assault charges.

In the report broadcast on Friday, Channel Two showed a Beit Shemesh street sign instructing women to keep to one side, away from a synagogue. A few ultra-Orthodox men who agreed to be interviewed sought to justify their forcible occlusion of women.

Israeli media have debated the impact of religious gender segregation on public transport and the conscript army, where some pious troops prefer to shun female instructors and singers.

The ultra-Orthodox make up only about 10 percent of Israel's population of 7.7 million. But their high birthrates and bloc voting patterns have helped them secure welfare benefits and wider influence. One of Netanyahu's biggest partners in the coalition government, Shas, is a party run by rabbis.

According to Channel Two, its Beit Shemesh story has generated momentum for a demonstration against ultra-Orthodox coercion in the town, scheduled for Tuesday.

Moshe Abutbol, the Shas mayor of Beit Shemesh put the number of townspeople involved in the abuse at between 20 and 50.

Emulating Israeli commandos who disguise themselves as Arabs for missions in Palestinian areas, the police have officers who work undercover among the ultra-Orthodox. Israeli television showed them raiding a religious protest in Jerusalem on Dec. 17.

Netanyahu has also condemned radical Jews behind a spree of vandalism against Palestinian property and Israeli garrisons in the occupied West Bank, attacks designed to bog down government moves to raze settlements built without a permit.

"Beit Shemesh shocked Netanyahu not because of new facts but because of old facts that were recounted by a lovely little blond-haired girl with blue eyes," said Nahum Barnea, senior commentator for the biggest-selling newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth.

Nigerians fear more church attacks after 39 killed

(AP)? MADALLA, Nigeria ? At a Nigerian Catholic church where a terror attack killed 35 people on Christmas, women tried to clean the sanctuary ahead of Mass on Monday while one man wept uncontrollably amid the debris.

Outside St. Theresa Catholic Church, crowds gathered among the burned-out cars in the dirt parking lot, angry over the attack claimed by a radical Muslim sect and fearful that the group will target more churches.

Rev. Father Christopher Jataudarde told The Associated Press that Sunday's blast happened as church officials gave parishioners white powder as part of a tradition celebrating the birth of Christ.

Some already had left the church at the time of the bombing, causing the massive casualties. In the chaos after the bombing, Jataudarde said one mortally wounded man, cradling his shredded stomach, begged him for religious atonement.

"Father, pray for me, I will not survive," the man said, according to the priest.

At least 52 people were wounded in the attack, said Slaku Luguard, a coordinator with Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency. Victims filled the cement floors of a nearby government hospital, some crying in pools of their own blood.

On Christmas, attacks by the radical Muslim sect left 39 dead across Africa's most populous nation. A bomb also exploded amid gunfire in the central Nigeria city of Jos and a suicide car bomber attacked the military in the nation's northeast.

After the bombings, a Boko Haram spokesman using the nom de guerre Abul-Qaqa claimed responsibility for the attacks in an interview with The Daily Trust, the newspaper of record across Nigeria's Muslim north. The sect has used the newspaper in the past to communicate with public.

"There will never be peace until our demands are met," the newspaper quoted the spokesman as saying. "We want all our brothers who have been incarcerated to be released; we want full implementation of the Sharia system and we want democracy and the constitution to be suspended."

Boko Haram has carried out increasingly sophisticated and bloody attacks in its campaign to implement strict Shariah law across Nigeria, a multiethnic nation of more than 160 million people. The group, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the local Hausa language, is responsible for at least 504 killings this year alone, according to an Associated Press count.

This Christmas attack comes a year after a series of Christmas Eve bombings in Jos claimed by the militants left at least 32 dead and 74 wounded. The group also claimed responsibility for the Aug. 26 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Nigeria's capital Abuja that killed 24 people and wounded 116 others.

While initially targeting enemies via hit-and-run assassinations from the back of motorbikes after the 2009 riot, violence by Boko Haram now has a new sophistication and apparent planning that includes high-profile attacks with greater casualties.

That has fueled speculation about the group's ties as it has splintered into at least three different factions, diplomats and security sources say. They say the more extreme wing of the sect maintains contact with terror groups in North Africa and Somalia.

Targeting Boko Haram has remained difficult, as sect members are scattered throughout northern Nigeria and the nearby countries of Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

Analysts say political considerations also likely play a part in the country's thus-far muted response: President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from the south, may be hesitant to use force in the nation's predominantly Muslim north.

Speaking late Sunday at a prayer service, Jonathan described the bombing as an "ugly incident."

"There is no reason for these kind of dastardly acts," the president said in a ceremony aired by the state-run Nigerian Television Authority. "It's one of the burdens as a nation we have to carry. We believe it will not last forever."

Huge rally supports Pakistani cricketer's politics (AP)

KARACHI, Pakistan ? Tens of thousands of people have rallied in support of Pakistani cricket legend and opposition politician Imran Khan in the southern city of Karachi.

Sunday's rally further cemented Khan's status as a rising force in Pakistani politics. The turnout was impressive because the event was held outside his traditional support base, Punjab province.

Karachi is Pakistan's largest city and the capital of Sindh province.

Khan entered politics 15 years ago when he founded Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, or the Movement for Justice Party, but he long struggled to attract support.

That changed when he drew over 100,000 people to a rally in the Punjabi capital of Lahore in October.

He has attracted several prominent politicians to his party since then.

"Mikhail Gorbachev called on Prime Minister Vladimir Putin not to seek a third term as president next..."

25 December 2011

home??

Mikhail Gorbachev called on Prime Minister Vladimir Putin not to seek a third term as president next year.

He told the Moscow Echo radio: ?I would advise Vladimir Putin to leave now. He has had three terms: two as president and one as prime minister. Three terms ? that is enough.?

Mr Gorbachev, 80, has been virulently critical of the elections that took place on December 4. Soon after the poll he said that the results of the poll should be annulled and new elections held due to ?numerous falsifications and rigging.?

?The results do not reflect the will of the people,? Mr Gorbachev said at the time. ?Therefore I think they [Russia?s leaders] can only take one decision ? annul the results of the election and hold new ones.?

The former president was considering attending the march in central Moscow today, to which thousands ventured. He was, however, unable to appear but passed his greetings to the protestors.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms were expected to develop across the South on Saturday, as a low pressure system continued moving eastward over Texas. The low pressure system that brought heavy snow to New Mexico and light snow to western Texas was expected to continue moving eastward toward the Gulf of Mexico and Lower Mississippi River Valley. This system was expected to pull warm and moist air in from the Gulf of Mexico, allowing for snow showers to turn to rain showers. Periods of heavy rain showers were expected to develop across most of Texas on Saturday, with lighter showers extending into the Lower Mississippi River Valley. There remained a slight risk severe thunderstorms would develop from eastern Texas through Louisiana and into Mississippi. Most areas were expected to see around one inch of rain, with up to two inches likely in areas of thunderstorm development. Strong winds with gusts from 25 to 35 mph also were expected.

Behind this system, cold air was expected to continue to pour into the Western U.S. from Canada. A dominant ridge continued building over the Rocky Mountains, allowing for dry and sunny conditions. High temperatures in the 20s and 30s were expected across the Rockies, while the West Coast remained in the 50s and 60s.

Meanwhile, in the Northeast, a cold front lingered over the Northeast and draped westward through the Great Lakes. This was expected to continue triggering widespread and light snow showers with accumulation around one inch. However, lake effect snow was likely in parts of the Upper Great Lakes, which may see up to three inches of new snow. Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday ranged from a morning low of -22 degrees at West Yellowstone, Mont. to a high of 86 degrees at Plant City, Fla.
